Proprioception

< Back

  • The sense that lets us perceive the location, movement and action of parts of the body.1
  • If there are impairments in proprioception then individuals often use visual feedback to identify where the body part is.
  • In driving proprioception loss is most likely to impact on safe foot pedal control as visual feedback is not available for foot position during the driving task.
  • Proprioceptive loss is best assessed using a static assessment unit and determining if the feet can move consistently and accurately between the pedals.  If a static rig is not available then consider grasping big toe by its sides with your thumb and index finger and moving it up and down.  Ask the patient to say, without looking, where the toe is.
  • Changing vehicle controls may allow for compensation if proprioception is impaired.
